Stage One of the DESIGN CONCEPTS' Process
the process of truly listening to customers

From a generic wish-list to specified design requirements

1 Understanding the Scope of Work

Before beginning a potential project, we first need to understand everything about the project. We typically start by asking about the existing conditions and location. We think about zoning requirements, property lines and setbacks. We may request a plat or survey of the property. These factors need to be understood early on in order to design a successful project. We generally work from the big picture to a more specific one. First the site, then the building.

We typically have an introductory meeting, remote or in person, to better understand the project, but more importantly to develop a good working relationship with our client. It is essential to have a shared understanding of the project. Only then can our clients begin to really trust that we can embody the spirit of the project from their viewpoint.

2 Formulate Identity

At DESIGN CONCEPTS we start from the belief that every project has a unique identity or story that should be reflected in the design. We believe that this is the only way to create a “space or place that belongs”.

How do we do this? By asking good questions and listening to the answers. By listening intently, analyzing effectively, and designing accordingly, we uncover the story that leads to the unique design.

3 Design Requirements

Once we determine the scope and identity of the project, it is time to identify the design requirements.

Based on all our interactions with the client to this point, design priorities are identified that help determine the shape, form and materials of each project.
