ST. BERNADETTE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Having outgrown their converted shopping center worship space, the Parish of St. Bernadette Catholic Church was in need of a larger sanctuary. Located on Main Street in the Town of Hedgesville had left little options for expansion. Fitting nicely between the existing sanctuary and the grotto to Mary, this 3,500 sq. ft. addition was designed to house a new sanctuary, while allowing for the conversion of the old sanctuary into a fellowship hall. The new addition maximizes the use of interior space while minimizing the impact on the existing parking lot.

Originally conceived as an extension of the grotto and a celebration of the miraculous apparition of Our Lady to St. Bernadette, the project took a different turn when furnishings from the now demolished St. Vincent Hospital in New York’s St. Claire Chapel were acquired by the parish priest after providing last rites to a prominent parishioner there. The beautifully crafted furnishings were reused in the new space including the priceless Franz Mayer Studio stained glass windows, as well as marble altar, flooring, and wall cladding.
